The NFL has suspended Los Angeles Rams left tackle Alaric Jackson for two games after he punched Bills linebacker Bradley Chubb in the face in the aftermath of "Monday Night Football."

In its announcement Tuesday, the league stated that Jackson was in violation of Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1 regarding "any act which is contrary to the generally understood principles of sportsmanship."

The incident took place on the field after Buffalo's 37-34 overtime win at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles on Monday. Jackson was exchanging his jersey with a Bills player when Chubb said something to Jackson and pointed at him from a distance.

Chubb turned around and walked away after his comment. Jackson followed Chubb, and the two exchanged words. Jackson then punched Chubb in the face. Chubb's teammates pulled him away from the scene before the incident could escalate further.

ESPN cameras recorded the incident during its postgame coverage.

It's not clear what Chubb or Jackson said leading up to the punch. Jackson had not addressed the incident as of Tuesday. Chubb said this of the incident to the California Post Monday night.

"It was a close game," Chubb said, per the Post. "And, you know, they always catch the second guy, so I let him swing and my teammates held me back and I just chilled."

Tough time for Rams to be without Jackson

The suspension of Jackson leaves the Rams without a key player during a critical juncture of their season.

A Rams team that entered the season as the favorite to win the Super Bowl fell to 2-3 with the loss and will now play its next two games without its most important offensive lineman.

Backup David Quessenberry will replace Jackson at left tackle while Jackson is out, protecting Matthew Stafford's blindside. Head coach Sean McVay confirmed Quessenberry's promotion Tuesday night.

Jackson will miss upcoming against the Arizona Cardinals and Las Vegas Raiders.

Against the Raiders, the Rams will be up against five-time Pro Bowl pass rusher Maxx Crosby. Against the Cardinals, they'll face former Pro Bowler Josh Sweat, who tallied a career-high 12 sacks last season.

After facing the Raiders, the Rams will play the Chargers, Commanders and Cardinals again before a Week 11 bye. They'll need a strong showing in that five-game stretch to remain afloat in the NFC playoff picture.
