LSU's Lane Kiffin explains thinking behind aggressive fourth down decision
LSU football head coach Lane Kiffin explained the decision making process behind his aggressive fourth down choice in the second quarter.
LSU football took an early chance with a seven-point lead at Auburn. On its first drive of the second quarter, head coach Lane Kiffin faced a decision on whether to keep the offense on the field on fourth and two. He went with the offense, and the Tigers converted.
"Book was fourth and one to go, fourth and two punt," Kiffin said. "I just really felt good about our matchups in this game, how our offense was playing coming into the game."
On the initial fourth down, a direct snap went to Dilin Jones. He tossed it back to Sam Leavitt, who threw it to Trey'Dez Green for the easy first down. Nine plays later, Leavitt connected with Green again for a 15-yard touchdown. It extended the lead to 17-3.
LSU was three for four on fourth-down attempts in the 38-17 victory. Leavitt moved the chains with a quarterback keeper on fourth and one in the purple and gold's opening drive of the second half. The third conversion came in the fourth quarter when Leavitt found Winston Watkins for a 14-yard pass.

"There were going to be some situations where I told myself we're going be playing around the side of being aggressive and putting it on our players because it just felt like it was a really good matchup game for us. Just through the week and watching tape and how we matchup with them, our [defensive] line against their [offensive] line and our receivers on certain reads."
LSU beat Auburn 38-17 on Saturday, giving the Tigers their first SEC road win in over two years.
