Seahawks trade for Chargers rookie cornerback

NFL roster cut down day doesn't only bring a slew of cuts, it also brings a ton of trades. The Seattle Seahawks are joining in on the fun.

Seattle has traded for undrafted rookie cornerback, Avery Smith . The Seahawks are sending a 2027 6 th round pick to the Los Angeles Chargers for the former Toledo standout.

Smith looks to compete for snaps at the nickel position. This perhaps could be why the Seahawks released D'Anthony Bell earlier today . It will be fascinating to see how the rest of the cornerback room shakes out with the addition of Smith along with the recent signing of Trevon Diggs as well as the three other rookie cornerbacks Seattle currently has on the roster (Julian Neal, Smith's former Toledo teammate Andre Fuller, and Michael Dansby).

However, Smith looks to also be a big special teams' contributor. In his senior season at Toledo, Smith registered 42 tackles, five tackles for loss, one interception, 11 pass deflections, and one forced fumble. Smith also returned a blocked extra point back for a two-point conversion. A fun nugget on Smith, he originally committed to Toledo to play quarterback before making the switch to cornerback.
