Kevin Harvick Questions RFK’s Brad Keselowski Explanation

Kevin Harvick says RFK Racing's explanation for Brad Keselowski's exit leaves too much unanswered. He also sees few top Cup rides open for the 2012 champion.

Kevin Harvick believes there is more to Brad Keselowski leaving RFK Racing than the team has shared. Harvick discussed the split on this week's episode of SPEED with Harvick and Buxton , the FOX Sports show he co-hosts with Will Buxton.

"So just incredible timing. And I think there's a lot more to this story that we have the pieces to fill in with things that are probably happening off the racetrack and in the race shop. It's too sudden for it not to have more pieces of the puzzle."

RFK Racing and Keselowski announced on Sept. 29 that they will part ways after the season. RFK president Chip Bowers said at Las Vegas on Saturday that the team wanted Keselowski to move into a competition role over the next two to three years.

Bowers compared that role to the jobs held by Chris Gabehart and Chad Knaus . Keselowski wanted to keep driving. MotorBiscuit has more on what Bowers said .

Gabehart was Denny Hamlin's longtime crew chief and later ran competition at Joe Gibbs Racing. He joined Spire Motorsports this year. Knaus won seven titles as Jimmie Johnson's crew chief and remains a Hendrick Motorsports executive.

Harvick said those jobs require an engineering background.

"I don't know how to say this nicely, but I'm going to say it. When you mentioned Chris Gabehart, and you mentioned Chad Knaus, Brad Keselowski is not capable of doing that job."

He praised Keselowski's knowledge as a driver. He said Keselowski can help lead the competition side through feedback and experience.

"But Brad Keselowski is not capable of doing the same things that Chad Knaus and Chris Gabehart are in the same way from a standpoint of engineering and the things that go with that."

Harvick added that the job would be too much to handle while still racing. He agreed with RFK that the role is a full-time commitment.

"He's 100% right. This is a 24-7 job to be able to keep up with the progression that goes with it."

Harvick said the timing makes it hard to find a top Cup ride with five races left in the season. He does not see Keselowski returning to Team Penske , where Austin Cindric drives the No. 2.

He also ruled out Hendrick Motorsports. Connor Zilisch will take over the No. 48 in 2028 when Alex Bowman steps away.

"So I think that the options are very limited for Brad to get back in a winning situation to be able to finish his career, like you'd want to see him finish by winning races."

Harvick did mention Dodge, which is exploring a Cup Series return. Kaulig Racing CEO Chris Rice has said he has not talked with Keselowski, as MotorBiscuit reported last week . Harvick still believes Dodge would be better with Keselowski behind the wheel.

"I think that their Cup car would be better with Brad Keselowski in it."

MotorBiscuit has also looked at possible landing spots for Keselowski . The NASCAR Cup Series races next at Charlotte on Sunday, Oct. 11, as the motorsports world waits on Keselowski's next move.
