Photographer carted off field after being struck in head by Ben Rice line drive

The New York Yankees exploded for five runs in the 10th inning on Wednesday night to capture a much-needed 6-3 victory over the Los Angeles Angels. Ben Rice, in the midst of a breakout season, collected two hits and an RBI. He was also at the center of a scary scene in the top of the sixth that delayed action for 10 minutes.

Rice was battling Angels pitcher Reid Detmers and turned around on a 2-2 pitch to hammer a line drive directly into the camera well adjacent to the Yankees' dugout on the first base side. It was immediately clear that something was wrong as play stopped and everyone turned their attention in the direction of where the ball had rocketed at top speed.

Unfortunately it became clear that it had struck a photographer in the head.

The Yankees' medical personnel banded together to treat the injured person, who was able to eventually walk under their own power to the cart while wearing a neck brace. Rice made sure he checked in on the photographer, shaking their hand before action resumed.

These are always scary moments as even those paying close attention and wearing a glove face a tall task in avoiding trouble when the exit velocity is so high from such a short distance. Throw in the fact that these photographers are likely to be looking into their cameras and not following the ball and it's an even more dangerous situation.

Thankfully, an Angels spokesperson relayed information that the injured party was "OK" and was receiving further medical treatment.

"Very relieved," Rice said after the game. "I saw it, he definitely was not ready for any kind of impact there, he was looking the other direction."
