Rory McIlroy opens up about burnout, motivation and his PGA Tour schedule
Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy stated he aims to stay engaged rather than just "go through the motions" and knows when to take a break.
Six-time major champion Rory McIlroy just wrapped up his 19th season on the PGA Tour , emphasizing he never wants to simply "go through the motions" and understands when it's necessary to step back and recharge.
McIlroy, fresh off a tied-for-fourth-place finish at the 2026 TOUR Championship with a score of 11-under par, shared he has realized merely participating in every PGA Tour event is not enough. He emphasized playing without enthusiasm is not something he intends to do; instead, he wants to ensure he competes at his highest level and will prioritize that when choosing which events to enter.
"I think once you start to lose your enthusiasm to go to the course, it's time to take a break," McIlroy said at the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta. "There have been times when I've shown up to events simply because I felt obligated, not because I was truly motivated to compete.
"If I'm going to enter a tournament, I want to give it my all and play my best. There have been occasions when I haven't met that standard, and I'm learning from those experiences."
McIlroy, 37, went on to explain perhaps his patience has shortened with age. He admitted playing three consecutive weeks in the FedEx Cup Series is challenging, and if it were still four weeks as it once was, he would find it nearly impossible to maintain his energy and focus for such an extended stretch.
"It's frustrating for me, but at the same time, no one wants to see me just going through the motions out there," McIlroy added. "This is my third consecutive week competing, which is rare for me now. I feel like I've reached my limit."
This season, McIlroy captured the 2026 Masters title and delivered five top-10 finishes, highlighted by a strong third-place showing at the BMW Championship.
