Watch: Andros Townsend run over by pitch roller in freak accident

Andros Townsend was lucky to escape without serious injury after appearing to be hit by a pitch roller while warming up for his football team PT Prachuap's 3-0 victory over Pattani FC in Thailand.

Footage has emerged that claims to be from the warm-up of the Thai League One match. In it, former Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace, Everton and England winger Townsend is seen jumping for a ball and attempting to backheel it in midair, as the roller drives towards him.

In the footage, the vehicle appears to collide with him before rolling over him as he lies on his side. The driver then appears to jump out and try to get the roller to lean over to one side until Townsend can get free.

Reportedly, Townsend's injuries from the incident were minor and he was able to come off the bench in the 93rd minute for Jesper Nyholm.

Townsend, 35, has been playing in Thailand for over a year – initially moving to play for Kanchanaburi Power. However, he left the side when they were relegated and headed for PT Prachuap in the Prachuap Khiri Khan province.

When Townsend joined his current club, they posted on social media: "Get ready. He's here. Time to welcome the new members of the carnage army. See you on the field. Welcome to the Killer Wasp Family." The phrase Killer Wasp refers to the team's nickname, with their badge depicting a wasp.

Townsend's last posting in the UK was with Luton Town, and he left them for Turkish outfit Antalyaspor in late 2024.

When Townsend signed up for his second team in the country, he posted online: "The Thai adventure continues." It is very unlikely he saw that adventure including a run-in with the grounds staff and their equipment.
