Former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles faces two new felony charges

Former Alabama basketball player Darius Miles faces two new felony charges after authorities found suspected synthetic marijuana among his belongings at the Tuscaloosa County Jail.

Miles, 24, is charged with second-degree promoting prison contraband and a tax stamp violation, according to a deposition and charge sheet filed in Tuscaloosa County District Court. Bond was set at $2,500 on each charge.

According to the deposition, a Tuscaloosa County Sheriff's Office agent responded to the jail Wednesday after staff found suspected "Paper Route," a form of synthetic marijuana, among Miles' property.

The substance was tested and returned a positive result for synthetic marijuana, investigators said. The suspected drug-soaked paper weighed 37 grams, according to the deposition.

Authorities also said they were unable to locate a tax stamp on the paper or its packaging, resulting in the tax stamp charge.

The suspected contraband was found inside a bag containing documents belonging to Miles, according to the deposition. Investigators said probable cause was established for both charges.

The evidence was photographed and sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for further examination, according to the deposition.

The new charges come as Miles remains jailed without bond while awaiting trial on a capital murder charge stemming from the January 2023 shooting death of 23-year-old Jamea Harris.

Miles has been held without bond since his January 2023 arrest. Prosecutors allege he provided the handgun used by his childhood friend, Michael Lynn Davis, during a shootout on Grace Street that resulted in Harris' death.

Davis was convicted in May 2025 and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Miles' capital murder case remains pending. A trial date was originally set for Dec. 1, 2025, but the case remains stalled as Miles' legal team awaits an appeal related to their request for the presiding judge's recusal.

The two new felony charges are separate from the capital murder prosecution.
