SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KTXL) — Sacramento Republic FC forward Kyle Edwards has developed a reputation for delivering when his team needs him most.
Whether it's a late-game goal, a burst of energy off the bench or a game-winning finish, Edwards has become one of Republic FC's most valuable weapons heading into the USL Championship playoffs.
"He's like a secret weapon. Although he's not so secret, but he's still very hard to stop," Republic FC head coach Neill Collins said.
Edwards finished the regular season with seven goals in the final 15 minutes of matches, the most in the USL Championship. Four of those goals were game-winners.
He also set a new league record with nine regular-season goals as a substitute, breaking his own mark of eight established in 2025. On September 26, Edwards also became the USL Championship's all-time leader in career regular-season goals scored off the bench.
For Edwards, the records are rewarding, but the moments behind them mean even more.
"It feels good. But I also know, like it's part of my job," Edwards said. "I'm happy that these goals come at very crucial times, and we can all celebrate it as a team and as fans and as a club as a whole."
His ability to deliver in critical moments has made him a difference-maker for Sacramento. Edwards also became just the fifth player in Republic FC history to score at least 10 goals in his first season with the club.
But his impact extends beyond the scoresheet.
"We always know, like, if we're not playing good or behind, we know we have him on the bench who can bring a massive spark," teammate Blake Willey said. "And he always finds a way to deliver."
It's a role Edwards has embraced throughout his first season with Republic FC, understanding that his contributions aren't always measured by goals.
"Even if I don't score, I just got to bring the energy because that's something I can control," Edwards said.
And when he does find the back of the net, there's a personal tradition that has become part of his celebrations.
Edwards often pulls out a headband he keeps around his waist and puts it on after scoring. The message reads "100% Jesus," a tribute to the faith he says has guided his journey.
"He blessed me with the talent, so I got to give back to him in any way possible," Edwards said. "And what more better way to give back to him than, you know, celebrating with him, scoring a goal."
Edwards credits his upbringing and his mother, who raised him alongside his two brothers and sister, for shaping the person he has become. He also credits his teammates for helping him grow both on and off the field.
Now, his focus shifts to the postseason, where Republic FC hopes to build on its regular-season success.
Following a dramatic final night of regular-season play, Sacramento enters the USL Championship playoffs as the Western Conference's No. 2 seed and will host seventh-seeded FC Tulsa on Sunday, November 1.
For Edwards, the opportunity to compete for a championship is exactly what brought him to Sacramento.
"I think adding the next star to the badge has been my number one goal," Edwards said. "And it still is."
Republic FC won its first league championship in 2014. Now, Edwards hopes to help bring another title to Sacramento.
Sunday's playoff match against FC Tulsa kicks off at 6 p.m. at Heart Health Park. Tickets are available at SacRepublicFC.com .
