'Outstanding' star makes Liverpool hierarchy eat their words about his future

Liverpool have made a lot of changes to their squad this summer.

Some players such as Harvey Elliott and Curtis Jones have been moved on , while others, such as Victor Munoz and Jeremy Jacquet have been brought in.

It's not just their playing staff what have changed either with a decent chunk of the Reds' backroom staff also being re-jigged.

Richard Hughes is now Al-Hilal's sporting director and Michael Edwards just decided to quit after Fenway Sports Group's multi-club model was thrown in the bin.

Even though all these changes have been made, it still feels like more needs to be done before Liverpool are ready to be seen as genuine contenders for the Premier League title again.

And, with the sheer number of contracts that are set to expire over the next couple of years, it's clear that a lot more re-jigging is on its way to Anfield.

However, for one Liverpool star, it feels like he's made a mockery of Liverpool after the decision that they made about his future.

Alexis Mac Allister has been told that he isn't good enough for a new Liverpool contract

Alexis Mac Allister 's contract may not expire until 2028 but, with the way that things have gone for Liverpool over the last couple of years, locking down the future's of any players with any sort of value is going to be key to their survival.

Recently, Trent Alexander-Arnold , Ibrahima Konate, Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson have all left L4 for nothing.

Obviously, some players such as Robertson and Salah may not have had all that much value left within them but, it still sucks for the Reds to have lost them for nothing.

And, since Jones' contract was going to expire at the end of the current campaign, he was also moved on for a cut-rate fee.

This is a pattern that Liverpool can't continue to follow but, as per an update from BBC Sport, it seems like Liverpool didn't think that Mac Allister was anywhere near good enough to earn a new contract.

"The understanding is the powers that be at Liverpool were of the belief that Mac Allister's performances did not warrant the offer of fresh terms," they wrote .

"But if he can carry on like this, then it will be a question of when rather than if that offer is made for whoever replaces Richard Hughes - even if Mac Allister said he didn't know if his goal would boost his chances of a new contract."

Over the last few weeks, it's clear that Andoni Iraola has been trying to figure out what his best XI actually is.

Cody Gakpo has been used on the right-wing and, the Reds' midfield has been changed around more times than anyone can remember.

From an outside perspective, it felt obvious that Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch would be Liverpool's starting midfielders.

However, after their opening game as a pair against Newcastle, it was clear that it wasn't going to work out.

So, this has led to Mac Allister being given a more prominent role than anyone expected and, if we're being honest, he's exceeded the expectations of everyone.

Last term, the Argentinian performed well below his usual standards with fans even demanding that he got sold.

However, that didn't end up happening which is why it's now a bit of a shock to see him becoming one of Liverpool's best players.

His determination on the pitch has been second-to-none and, his goal against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday evening was stunning.

If he continues performing to this level, he'll certainly end up making Liverpool re-think their stance on the " outstanding " midfielders future, even if a renewal is likely to cost them an arm and a leg.
