‘Grow up…’ Ben Johnson explains how Chicago Bears helped take out Caleb Williams’ ‘goofy’ side

Caleb Williams has adopted a more serious approach since his time with the Chicago Bears, and Ben Johnson explained how the youngster's maturity has come about.

Williams has been on the receiving end of criticism from some fans for his demeanour and general attitude off the field, with people taking umbrage at his aloof disposition.

However, heading into the 2026 season, Johnson and the Bears coaching staff are thrilled to see a far more focused approach.

Speaking to reporters ahead of the Chicago Bears' Gameweek 1 fixture against the Carolina Panthers, HC Ben Johnson was asked about the difference he's seen in Caleb Williams this season.

He admitted that Williams abandoned his 'goofy' and aloof approach for a more intentional and serious one this season, and he is growing into a leadership role.

"I've seen a very composed person every time he steps into the building. This guy might have had a little goofy to him a year ago, and I use that term with love.

"Now you see a more serious player and intent every time around him. I think his teammates feel that as well.

"He's getting to the practice field early, he's making sure his part is taken care of, he's warmed up and ready to go, he's staying with the guys after practice. You see that on a regular basis.

"He's taken a lot of pride in his approach right now, and it trickles down to everyone around him. I think it is a great thing. I think he continues to grow up, and he's going to be a huge leader for us this year."

Williams had an excellent season last year, and was even getting MVP consideration for the way he helped the Bears go from a perennially losing team to a genuine Super Bowl contender.

While the youngster couldn't overcome league MVP Matthew Stafford and the Rams in the playoffs, his performance last season has given the Bears an excellent foundation to build on.
