The Week 5 showdown between the Washington Commanders and the New York Giants ended in a surprising tie as neither team managed to secure the win in overtime. Dan Quinn's squad has now fallen to 1-3-1 after that tie, while the Giants go to 3-1-1.
During The Colin Cowherd Podcast, host Colin Cowherd talked about the tie and that it only resulted in Dan Quinn getting into more trouble, saying that this was a "fireable moment." Fellow analyst John Middlekauff agreed, saying that he would have fired Quinn if it was up to him after what The Volume called an "OT Mess."
"I know he's a nice guy, but I'd fire him," Middlekauff said. "This isn't the end of the game, you could have kicked the field goal at 45 seconds. The game's over, everyone's touched the ball, this is overtime, leave! Everyone was stagnant on this… Dan Quinn would have had to say something. Any coach from the history of the league would have taken over from the sideline and started screaming at Jayden Daniels."
Middlekauff noted that the Commanders had the ball in their hands in the closing seconds. He stated that the team could have kicked a field goal with 45 seconds remaining and won that game. He added that Dan Quinn could have also taken over and directed his players to do the right actions to win and not end up with a tie.
Dan Quinn Says Tie Was "My Responsibility"
During the post-game press conference, Washington Commanders head coach Dan Quinn had to face the press after his team failed to score in the closing seconds against the Giants, leading to the tie. The coach owned up , stating that it was his responsibility.
"The last sequence, we throw it out of bounds, we clock it, you give yourself a chance to kick it," he told reporters. "And we pride ourselves on those moments at the end of the game. And after the first-down run, still trying to gain more for the kick. The right call is honestly like, we can go clock it early and don't put ourselves in that spot, and that is my responsibility. Nobody else's. I'm gutted for our team. We were given a lot of ops [opportunities] tonight to go find our win in all three phases, and we did not seize them."
He also admitted that it was not quarterback Jayden Daniels' fault, as they could have finished it early with a kick and that they did not need to gain any more yards in order to make that field goal attempt possible.
