David Stone injury update: OU football DL's initial X-rays on knee 'positive'

NORMAN — Oklahoma defensive lineman David Stone was injured during Monday's practice while going up against the scout team's offense, coach Brent Venables said Tuesday.

Despite a report that circulated Monday night, Venables said Stone's injury did not occur while the defensive lineman was on offense. The Sooners ' coach said initial X-rays were positive but that his status for this week's game against Georgia is unclear.

"If David is unavailable this week, we're going to need some guys to step up and play big," Venables said.

Venables also said Stone's pain at the moment is a 2 out of 10.

The 6-foot-3, 315-pound star tackle is one of the best defensive linemen in college football with first-round NFL Draft talent. After a slow start to the season, Stone recorded a career-high eight tackles in the Sooners ' win over New Mexico .

The Del City native also registered two tackles for loss and a half sack against the Lobos.

If Stone misses time, OU will likely heavily rely on reserves like Nigel Smith II, Bishop Thomas and Trent Wilson . Boise State transfer Braxton Fely and Arkansas transfer Danny Saili, who both just joined the team, could also see more action.

The Sooners' first SEC availability report will be released Wednesday ahead of their game against Georgia .
