Yankees vs Rays live updates, analysis of day-night doubleheader

NEW YORK – Entering this day-night doubleheader at Yankee Stadium, the math is pretty simple.

With one win, the Tampa Bay Rays are the AL East champs and the Yankees are officially a wild card entry, likely to host the Boston Red Sox in a best-of-three next week.

"(We'll) try to push it off as much as we can,'' said Yanks manager Aaron Boone. "We want to play well.''

Boone's club also needs to prepare for postseason, which includes getting some players back – though Aaron Judge (calf strain) won't be one of them.

The slugging captain and defending AL MVP isn't in the Yanks' first-round playoff plans, per Boone.

But second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. (thumb sprain) should be activated off the injured list to start in the nightcap.

Right-hander Clarke Schmidt (biceps cramp) underwent tests Monday that showed "nothing significant.''

He'll play catch Tuesday and it "looks like he's in a pretty good spot,'' said Boone, though Schmidt's status won't be fully known until after he throws.

Ryan Weathers (flexor strain) is due to throw a bullpen session between games and is in play for activation before the first playoff round.
