UVA reunites with Miami, Virginia Tech with UNC next football season

Following extended separations, Virginia and Virginia Tech each will reunite with a former ACC Coastal Division rival next football season.

The conference Wednesday unveiled league opponents for next year, and among the highlights are the Cavaliers' first game against Miami since 2023 and the Hokies' first contest versus North Carolina since 2022. Those four programs resided in the Coastal Division from 2005-22 — the 2020 pandemic season excepted — and played annually until the conference abandoned divisions for 2023 and beyond.

Schedule dates will be announced after this season, likely in late January. Virginia and Virginia Tech's 2027 ACC opponents are as follows.

Home: Louisville, Pitt, SMU, Virginia Tech.

Away: Boston College, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, Stanford.

Home: Clemson, Miami, NC State, Syracuse, Wake Forest.

Away: Georgia Tech, Louisville, North Carolina, Virginia.

The Hokies will complete their schedule with nonconference games against The Citadel, Liberty and Notre Dame. The Cavaliers have nonconference dates with Arkansas State and William & Mary but have not revealed their required Power Four opponent from outside the ACC.

Here's why: Georgia Tech plays nine ACC games next season but has nonconference dates on the books against Hampton, Tennessee, Notre Dame and Georgia. So, one of the four has to go.

Since Virginia needs a Power Four, simply swap Georgia Tech for UVA on Notre Dame's schedule.

Next season will mark the ACC's second with a nine-game conference schedule and its fourth since expanding to 17 teams by adding SMU, Cal and Stanford. The principles adopted for the 17-team model in 2024 remain: protected rivalries such as Virginia Tech-UVA, Virginia-North Carolina and Miami-Virginia Tech; Eastern time zone programs don't travel to California in consecutive seasons; teams play at least twice every seven seasons.

In shifting to a nine-game model, the ACC required at least one nonconference date with a Power Four peer or independent Notre Dame. To make the scheduling math work, one ACC team each year will play eight league games — that's Clemson in 2027 — and must play two Power Fours/Notre Dame.

After months of conversations, ACC athletic directors approved the 2027 schedule during in-person meetings last week at conference headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina. With uncertainty surrounding College Football Playoff expansion, the ADs tabled discussion on a 2028-32 rotation of opponents until the offseason.
