The Bearkats begin their second season under head coach Phil Longo, looking for a significant turnaround after finishing 2-10 in 2025. Sam Houston brings back quarterback Landyn Locke, who started the final three games last season and threw for 765 yards across his appearances. With more roster and coaching continuity than Longo had during his first year, the Bearkats will try to establish that progress immediately against a quality Sun Belt opponent.

Troy also makes its 2026 season debut after winning eight games and reaching the Sun Belt Championship Game last season. Gerad Parker's Trojans enter the year with a rebuilt roster and a new offensive coordinator, making Saturday an early test for a program that has reached the conference title game three times in the past four seasons. Troy has also won the last five meetings with Sam Houston, although all five came when the programs competed at the FCS level.
