Verstappen takes 35 minutes to complete epic kart challenge

Max Verstappen delivered another remarkable demonstration of his racecraft by winning the inaugural Max vs 100 karting challenge at Silverstone. Starting 101st and last on a grid filled with 100 opponents, the four-time Formula 1 world champion completed his charge to first place in just 35 minutes, well before the planned 30-lap distance had been completed.

The event placed Verstappen in identical karting machinery to a field featuring athletes, content creators, personalities and motorsport figures. The objective was straightforward but daunting: pass every one of the 100 drivers ahead of him. Any competitor overtaken by Verstappen was eliminated from the race.

The scale of the challenge made it unlike a typical kart race. Verstappen was required to thread through a massive field on a purpose-built Silverstone layout, where traffic, congestion and potential contact were as significant as outright pace. Before the event, he had acknowledged that overtaking 100 people would be difficult and predicted "carnage" among the karts ahead.

That prediction proved accurate almost immediately. At the start, the field became compressed through the early corners and a bottleneck developed at a hairpin. Verstappen used the disorder to make exceptional progress.

He overtook 64 karts on the opening lap, moving from 101st to 37th despite a yellow-flag interruption and a brief trip onto the grass.

His advance continued at an extraordinary pace. By lap two, he had climbed to 36th. By lap three, he was 26th and within striking distance of the leaders.

Verstappen reached the top 20 on lap four, the top 10 by lap six, and fifth position by lap seven. The expected 30-lap challenge was rapidly turning into a short, decisive pursuit.

There was one minor setback when Verstappen ran off track on lap six and lost a Go-Pro from his kart. However, the incident did little to halt his momentum. Once he found clean air, he continued to reduce the gap to the front runners with relentless speed.

The format included a tactical "fast lap" shortcut. Verstappen's rivals could use theirs during the opening half of the race, while Verstappen's own opportunity was reserved for the second half. Organisers even gave the leaders additional fast-lap opportunities in an apparent attempt to keep the contest alive. It was not enough.

By lap nine, Verstappen had moved into fourth and was closing rapidly on the leading trio: Dutch journalist Jacky Martens, YouTuber Zac Alsop and Red Bull Powertrains employee Lewis Osler. Osler briefly delayed Verstappen with strong defensive driving and an extra fast lap, but the Formula 1 champion soon erased the advantage.

On lap 15, Verstappen completed the comeback. He passed Martens and Alsop to secure victory, completing the journey from 101st to first after approximately half the scheduled race distance.

Verstappen said: "My first lap was quite incredible," he said. "There was a lot happening and actually a few cars got stuck and I always managed to be on the other side, so didn't get stuck.

"And that made me get like 60 people in the first lap. So that just helps a lot, getting through to the front."

He's asked where it ranks in his victories. "I think this is the best one yet!"

The result highlighted the karting instincts that underpinned Verstappen's rise to Formula 1.
