Georgia has flipped another talented in-state prospect from an SEC rival. Powder Springs (Ga.) McEachern cornerback Nash Johnson has flipped his commitment from Auburn to Georgia, giving Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs another important addition to their secondary.
Johnson's recruitment has taken several turns. He initially committed to Alabama before reopening his recruitment and eventually choosing Auburn. But Georgia continued building its relationship with the talented defensive back, and the Bulldogs gradually gained momentum.
Johnson visited Athens in September, and his conversations with Georgia's staff became increasingly significant as the season progressed. The decision to flip didn't happen overnight.
"I've been thinking about this decision for a while now, especially throughout the summer when I stayed in communication with the coaches," Johnson told Rivals.
Georgia's track record of developing defensive backs played a major role in Johnson's decision. So did the opportunity to grow under Smart and his staff.
"I like what they have going on, the way they develop DBs, and how I feel like they can help me grow not just as a football player but as a man too. I feel like Georgia can prepare me for the next level and push me to be the best version of myself on and off the field."
Georgia's pursuit gained traction while Johnson remained committed to Auburn. The Bulldogs stayed in contact, continued making their pitch and ultimately convinced him that Athens offered the best opportunity for his future.
Johnson also wanted to make clear that his decision wasn't driven by outside circumstances.
"It's not about money or the situation with anybody else, it's about what I feel is best for my future," Johnson said. "I've prayed on it and really thought about it, and Georgia is somewhere I can see myself growing and succeeding."
Smart's approach to coaching was another major factor.
"Coach Smart holds his players accountable and pushes them to be great at everything they do," Johnson said. "It's bigger than just football with him, he wants his players to be disciplined, tough, and carry themselves the right way as men.
"I feel like being around a coach like that would push me out my comfort zone and help me grow on and off the field."
For Georgia, the flip represents another recruiting victory within its home state and against an SEC competitor.
