“We’ve Lost Sight of That”: LSU Legend Raises Concerns on Lane Kiffin’s “$40 Million Roster” Management After Upset Loss vs. Kentucky

Lane Kiffin spent more than $40 million on NIL to assemble his roster for his debut campaign with the LSU Tigers. However, the team's playoff hopes are in shambles after Saturday's disappointing 35-34 overtime loss to the Kentucky Wildcats.

On Monday's episode of the " 4th and South " podcast, former LSU stars Jarvis Landry and Leonard Fournette discussed Kiffin and his team after the loss to Kentucky. Landry compared the current team to their time with the program and raised concerns about LSU's future despite the multimillion-dollar NIL investment.

"They're really good at defense," Landry said. "They fly around. They get hands to the ball. Whatever it is. But when I played during my time there, during your time there, what I saw was man-to-man press coverage. We don't care who y'all are. We are better. We don't need no help. We not bracketing nobody. And I feel like this new age defense, they are bracketing. "They are playing more cover three-quarters, all of this cover two. Bro, it's man on man, big on big, we better than y'all. And I feel like we've lost sight of that at LSU. The same way we lost sight of a fourth-and-one game on the line. We have a $40 million roster. We can't get one yard with $40 million?"

Landry played for LSU from 2011 to 2013 as a wide receiver. During his college career with the program, he recorded 1,809 yards on 137 receptions and 15 TDs before being drafted No. 63 by the Dolphins in 2014.

The LSU Tigers had a 27-24 lead in the fourth quarter. However, Adam Zouagui's field goal forced the game into overtime. Quarterback Sam Leavitt's 15-yard rushing TD put the Tigers ahead 34-27.

However, the defense failed to keep Kentucky at bay. Running back CJ Baxter scored a one-yard rushing TD to make it 34-33. The Wildcats then sealed the win with a successful two-point conversion attempt.

Lane Kiffin Blames Lack of Execution as Reason for Loss to Kentucky

In the postgame press conference, Lane Kiffin said that the reason LSU lost to Kentucky was that they failed to execute the chances they had.

"If you don't execute, then you don't execute," Kiffin said. "The punt return, got a player there tackling him and doesn't tackle him, you know, and it goes outside. The long run, we get scooped out of the gap and the ball goes for a long run. So, if you don't do fundamentally sound stuff, you get exposed versus good teams."

The LSU Tigers (4-2) will next face Mississippi State (4-1) on Saturday, Oct. 17.
