Rare Ferrari tied to Bulls legend sets new public auction record for the model.

A luxury car once owned by Michael Jordan has sold for an eye-watering amount.

The custom Ferrari 550 Maranello previously owned by the Chicago Bulls legend sold for $2.7 million on Wednesday via Pharrell William's auction house JOOPITER.

Only 3,083 models were built between 1996 and 2001.

The sales price blew past the auction house's estimate and set a new public-auction record for the model, according to JOOPITER.

The Ferrari attracted 43 bids, which isn't surprising due to its one-of-a-kind connection to Jordan.

Jordan purchased the Rosso Barchetta-colored car in 1997 in the middle of his championship run with the Bulls. Weeks later, he was spotted leaving the United Center in the car after winning his fifth NBA title.

Michael Jordan's Ferrari inspired the Air Jordan 14

The Ferrari had a significant connection to the NBA legend's Air Jordan sneaker line.

Nike designer Tinker Hatfield once used the custom Ferrari as inspiration for the Air Jordan 14.

In addition to serving as an inspo for shoes, the vehicle was unique in several other ways.

It featured custom seat tracks to accommodate Jordan's 6-foot-6 frame.

According to the auction listing, "Ferrari is understood to have extended the seat rails and specified slimmer-than-standard padding, allowing the seating position to be set as far back as possible. The specification remains one of the rarest and most elegant offered on the 550 Maranello: Rosso Barchetta over tan leather."

Jordan sold the car in 2002, and it basically disappeared from public view for nearly 24 years before being rediscovered.

John Temerian, co-founder of vintage car preservation company Curated, reportedly purchased the luxury car from the long-term California owner in May.
