Here are five things we learned from Week 6 of Wichita Falls-area high school football.
Petrolia vs Archer City high school football
Newcastle entered Friday facing a Jayton program that hadn't lost a football game since 2023.
That streak ended in about as dramatic a fashion as possible.
With the score tied at 52 and Jayton threatening in the final seconds, Newcastle's Keegen Voyles intercepted a pass near the goal line and returned it 79 yards for the game-winning touchdown. The 58-52 victory snapped Jayton's 34-game winning streak, which included two state championships.
The significance goes beyond Newcastle just moving to 4-1. The Bobcats showed they can execute in high-pressure situations against Texas' best, giving them a victory that carries massive weight as the season presses on.
Memorial entered Friday looking for a response after opening District 2-5A Division II play with a 49-28 loss to Abilene Cooper. The Mavericks got one in emphatic fashion.
Memorial (3-3) rolled past Lubbock Coronado 59-7 en route to its first District 2-5A Division II victory of the year. Coronado entered the matchup at 1-4, but that certainly doesn't diminish the significance of the win.
The decisive victory pushed the Mavericks back to .500 and showed they still have plenty to play for as district action ramps up.
Legacy came into Friday's matchup on a two-game losing streak after falling 43-42 to Greenwood and 50-9 to Amarillo Palo Duro.
The Leopards (4-2) responded with a 37-14 road victory over Lubbock-Cooper to earn their first District 2-5A Division II win of the season — and just their second in the young program's history. Knox Hodges threw two touchdown passes as Legacy built a 23-7 halftime advantage.
After managing only nine points against Palo Duro, Legacy's offense looked much more like itself on Friday. The Leopards now head into their Week 7 bye with a chance to build on that performance before returning to district play.
Seymour belongs in the district conversation
Seymour entered Friday with an opportunity to make a real move in District 6-2A Division II, and an unbeaten Munday team gave it the perfect test.
The Panthers pulled away for a 49-26 victory, handing the Moguls their first loss of the season and improving to 4-2 overall and 2-0 in district play. Jaxon Carrington led the way with 95 yards and three touchdowns on 13 carries, scoring on runs of 9, 11 and 29 yards — his longest run of the night.
The win knocked off a 5-0 opponent, kept the Panthers perfect in league play and added real weight to the rest of their district schedule.
Isaac Ybarra gave Early exactly what it needed after the Longhorns fell behind early against a 4-1 Bowie team.
The senior running back carried 25 times for 231 yards and three touchdowns, scoring on runs of 32, 44 and 50 yards as Early (5-1) scored 31 unanswered points to turn a 14-7 deficit into a 45-20 victory.
The Longhorns also forced four second-half turnovers, giving the offense short-field advantages and helping turn a competitive game into a comfortable win.
More importantly, Early showed it can win with a clear formula: lean on Ybarra, create takeaways and wear teams down as the game goes on.
