Liberty begins its 2026 season after finishing a disappointing 4-8 last year. The Flames ended 2025 with four straight losses, including a 48-42 double-overtime loss to Kennesaw State in the finale. Liberty rushed for 291 yards and five touchdowns in that game, but its defense allowed 267 rushing yards and four scores to Kennesaw State running back Evan Dickens. Wide receiver Jamari Person is back after finishing second on the team last season with 28 catches for 315 yards. Liberty will also be looking to reverse last year's 31-13 loss to James Madison.

James Madison went 12-2 and won the Sun Belt championship last season, reaching the College Football Playoff. The Dukes return only five starters and have 61 newcomers, including 39 transfers, under new head coach Billy Napier. Running back George Pettaway is one of the key returners after earning preseason second-team All-Sun Belt honors. At the same time, offensive lineman Zach Greenberg and edge Amar Thomas were named to the preseason first team. JMU has won 23 straight home openers and enters Saturday's game having won six consecutive season openers.
