Backlash after Texas QB Arch Manning calls AI video of Sarkisian hitting Rowe 'hilarious'

Texas Longhorns quarterback Arch Manning is receiving criticism for comments he made Monday about an AI-generated video that featured his head coach and ESPN reporter Holly Rowe.

During his weekly media availability, Manning was asked if he had seen any online videos that had been posted about Saturday night's postgame scene at Royal-Memorial Stadium. Manning said he had seen an AI-edited video about the abrupt interview between Texas coach Steve Sarkisian and Rowe following the Longhorns' 24-23 win over Ohio State .

After his response received some laughter and goading from media members, Manning smiled as he asked: "Y'all seen that one? That's a good one. Of him slapping Holly Rowe? Yeah, it's hilarious."

Once again, laughter became audible in a room of reporters much older than the 22-year-old Manning.

The AI-generated video that Manning referenced featured Sarkisian ending his interview with a backhanded slap of Rowe, a veteran ESPN reporter. In reality, Sarkisian walked away from a visibly annoyed Rowe after saying, "Let's go, Texas fight! Hook 'Em."

Due to the violence depicted in the fake video, both Manning's comments and the subsequent reaction of reporters were denounced by many on social media. Some users, however, used their platforms to defend Manning and argue that the exchange was misunderstood.

As of Tuesday morning, Texas had not responded to an American-Statesman inquiry about the comment or a clarification. Manning had not addressed the incident either.

Sarkisian was not asked about his interaction with Rowe during a 30-minute availability Monday. Over the weekend, a UT spokesperson told The Athletic that technical difficulties were a factor in the awkward exchange between Sarkisian and Rowe.

Texas (2-0) will play UTSA (2-0) at home on Saturday night . The Longhorns are ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press poll .
