Mets news: Devin Williams may still return from injury this season

The New York Mets are missing the postseason for the second consecutive year. Even though New York 's National League team doesn't have much left to play for, it appears reliever Devin Williams may soon return. The reliever has been dealing with a shoulder strain .

"(Williams) continued his mound work with a Sept. 14 bullpen session at Citi Field. Expects to throw another on Sept. 17. Could be activated two or three days after that," MLB.com reported.

The Mets reliever has been out of the bullpen since August. He has 16 saves this season and holds a 4.66 ERA for New York. Williams has appeared in 42 games.

This is Williams' first season with the Mets. He spent the 2025 campaign with the New York Yankees , where he struggled. Williams finished that campaign with six losses and a 4.79 ERA.

Williams is not the only Mets pitcher looking to return from injury. So is left-hander Cionel Perez , who is dealing with a forearm strain. Perez is also expected to return before the end of the year.

Mets are looking to make change after this year

New York has had a disaster of a year. Despite having a large payroll and lots of talent on the roster including Juan Soto , the club just wasn't able to win enough games this season. The Mets are currently 69-81 on the campaign.

The team will be looking for a new manager for the 2027 campaign. Carlos Mendoza was fired after the team got out to a rough start to the year. Mendoza had led the team to the NLCS in 2024, but the club had little success after that.

New York plays the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday. This Mets-Orioles series marks the return of former Mets star Pete Alonso to Queens . Alonso now plays for Baltimore.

The Mets have wins in six of their last 10 games.
