Bill Simmons suggests dramatic change the LA Clippers need to make after Kawhi Leonard controversy

Bill Simmons has encouraged the Los Angeles Clippers to make some drastic changes after the recent salary cap circumvention scandal involving Kawhi Leonard 's 2021 contract extension.

The Clippers have not only forfeited five first-round picks, but owner Steve Ballmer has been fined $30 million and received a year-long suspension, as have executives Gillian Zucker and Lawrence Frank (six months).

Leonard has since been traded to the Toronto Raptors for Brandon Ingram , Gradey Dick and two first-round picks. Although this appears a positive start to the Clippers' rebuild, Simmons believes they are beyond repair.

Bill Simmons has shared the controversial view that the Los Angeles Clippers should do more than simply rebuild. As LA's second NBA team and a franchise that has consistently struggled to meet expectations, the Clippers could be a prime candidate for a rebrand.

Simmons also highlighted that the Clippers have never made the Finals or even retired a jersey number. Who knows whether a rebrand would help them on the court, but at this stage, it is worth trying almost anything.

Simmons said, "Should they just change their name? Is this it? Is it rebrand time? And have we had a rebrand over the years in the NBA that has actually worked? And the answer to that is: maybe not. We had the Brooklyn Nets , the New Orleans Pelicans , and a Charlotte rebrand with the expansion team. Do rebrands work? Can it work with a sports franchise?

"And would you call it LA? I always thought they should be called the Hollywood Knights, even though they're not in Hollywood. Or you could call it Hollywood Nights with an 'N'. Either way, it would just feel completely different.

"I think they need to do something like that now. Granted, everybody who would be involved in that decision is suspended for a year. So I don't even know if they can do it. But I just wonder, have we run the course?

"Has 50 years of the Clippers just being a train wreck and coming up with scandals that we didn't even know could exist. Is it just time to start over? They don't even have a retired number. They've never made the finals. Can you just reset this right now in some way?"

Clippers fans will probably not be pleased with Simmons' suggestion to turn the franchise upside down following their recent struggles. The team has already faced significant consequences from the salary cap scandal and will not want another setback.
