Michigan football schedule for 2027 gets update, including Texas game

Michigan football has tweaked its schedule for the 2027 season.

What has recently been known as "Week 0" has been eliminated and now the entire Football Bowl Subdivision will open its season prior to Labor Day weekend 2027.

As a result, Michigan's season opener against Buffalo has been moved to Aug. 28, its Week 2 matchup at Texas has been moved to Sept. 4 (previously Sept. 11) and the Wolverines will wrap up their nonconference season Sept. 11 against Eastern Michigan in Ann Arbor.

There was concern earlier this week after a report that U-M's game vs. EMU had been moved to the previously scheduled date with Texas, but a team spokesman told the Free Press it was simply the required schedule shuffling with the season being moved up and the big time matchup in Austin would be on as scheduled.

This also means Michigan will have two bye weeks in the 2027 season, though those dates (like the rest of the schedule) are still to be determined.

Michigan's return trip to Texas represents the back half of a home-and-home with the Longhorns . The first matchup came in 2024, when UT came to Ann Arbor and beat U-M 31-12 in Week 2.

This will mark the third time the two sides meet in the span of four seasons − the Longhorns beat the Wolverines 41-27 in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl in Orlando, Fla. on Dec. 31, 2025, in a game coached by interim coach Biff Poggi, less than one week after Kyle Whittingham was named Michigan's new head man.
