Aryna Sabalenka takes her sport very seriously.
After defeating Polina Iatcenko in the second round of the US Open in New York City on Wednesday, September 2, the Belarusian tennis star, 28, was asked by a reporter about her "mood now that the tournament has started," in a press conference posted on YouTube .
"Obviously, last week it's lots of parties and fun and stuff like that," the reporter noted.
Sabalenka shook her head and interrupted, "You guys are, like, a joke. Parties, fun… like, why would you even say that? Why would you even think about that? Like, what kind of question is that?"
"Just because I posted, like, some activities with brands , and you think that I've been partying, not training?" the two-time US Open champ continued.
"I'm not saying you go to the parties and that you're…." the reporter tried to clarify.
"You literally said that," the No. 1 seed snapped, before adding, "Next question."
"For everyone who is unclear, I'm not suggesting that Aryna is having fun at these parties," the reporter continued.
"Thanks yeah," Sabalenka responded. "OK. Move on."
The reporter then tried to rephrase his question. "So now that the tournament has started, do you find you're getting quite serious and combative?"
"Oh, yeah, I wasn't serious before that. Next question," the clearly irritated athlete replied quickly.
As the next reporter began to speak, she blurted, "Think before you say stuff."
Sabalenka will face Kamilla Rakhimova in the third round on Friday, September 4.
