Mike Norvell's seat is hot, but he could still save his job
FSU head coach Mike Norvell is still on the hot seat with a 2-2 start. However, he can still save his job if the Seminoles go on a string of wins.
Florida State just hasn't lived up to the program's standards over the last few seasons. Since the 2023 season, the Seminoles have a record of 9-19 with a dreadful 3-14 mark in the ACC. Currently, they're 2-2, and they have a very tough conference schedule over the next two months, starting with the Virginia Cavaliers on Saturday.
Mike Norvell is the one who has all eyes on him for these failures as the head coach. The seat he's sitting on is hot. In fact, it's scorching, and it will only get worse if FSU keeps losing games. With that said, according to John Talty of CBS Sports , Norvell can still turn things around with a plethora of wins.
Since the season started, Florida State has fired its AD, suffered a bizarre power outage in its home opener, and has stumbled to a 2-2 record. There's a path to Mike Norvell keeping his job, but it almost certainly needs to include a win over Virginia this weekend. Norvell needs to be in that 7-win range and still has games against Louisville , Miami and Florida on the schedule. With an athletic department in transition, a $46.7 million buyout is still a huge sum to pay out, and it could help Norvell's cause if he can get a few more wins. If Norvell can win two of the next three (UVA, Louisville, Miami) before the bye, there's a viable path to survival.
Norvell is generally seen as a very nice guy and someone that people gravitate to, especially his players. Those are great qualities for a person to have, but football is a results business, and Florida State isn't producing the amount of wins it needs to. Until that happens, Norvell will continue to feel the pressure from the Seminoles fan base, and he should.
There's also the Jimbo Fisher factor. It was reported a few weeks ago that FSU is exploring the possibility of bringing him back if things don't turn around. That possibility will become even more appealing if Norvell has his fifth losing season in seven years.
Time will tell how this all plays out. However, one thing is for certain: Norvell needs to win if he wants to remain the head coach at Florida State.
