Booking Rey Mysterio's Best Opponents For Rumored WWE Retirement Tour

When thinking of possible upcoming WWE retirements, Rey Mysterio doesn't top the list.

But Mysterio has always had a way of jumping over things and stealing shows in a way that landed him in the WWE Hall of Fame, among his many accolades.

From the sounds of it, Mysterio is the big name hanging up the boots in 2027.

According to WrestleVotes Radio (h/t Sean Rueter of Cageside Seats), there has already been some motion in WWE as to how the company would present Mysterio's retirement in the ring next year.

Booking Mysterio's goodbye isn't that difficult. But this is WWE. Neither was John Cena's and we all saw how that went. Everyone also sees how so-so the booking has been since for Gunther, the guy doing the retiring.

Mysteiro will turn 52 in December and he's been on record saying that his body's slowing down, bringing his in-ring career to a close. Luckily for him (and fans), his farewell tour won't demand major in-ring stress.

After all, Mysterio is currently an on-screen AAA general manager. Bringing that role back to weekly WWE programming on one of the three big shows makes a bunch of sense.

Family helps here. Mysterio's daughter, Aalyah, is training at the WWE Performance Center. Using Mysterio in an almost managerial or mentor role to help introduce her to crowds properly would be a shrewd way to go, even if it's just on NXT episodes.

Of course, onlookers want to know about the in-ring stuff more.

The conversation must start with Dominik Mysterio. They've had their brush-ups before, since his son really started going on the active roster back in 2020 (has it really been that long already?). Those two linking up again is a must.

A lot of Cena's farewell tour was rekindling old, classic feuds. Even if it's just backstage segments or in-ring promos with surprises like Batista, Kurt Angle and Undertaker, to name a very few, it would be a nice ode to his legendary career. Add Randy Orton's name to Dominik's when it comes to actual matches, of course.

The other element of Cena's goodbye tour was paying it forward, or the so-called passing the torch. That's where the in-ring stuff would really come from with Mysterio.

It's timely, too. Amid Penta's shocking rise to Money in the Bank briefcase winner, Wrestling Observer Radio's Dave Meltzer (h/t WrestleZone's Ojas Kulkarni ) suggested that WWE is changing its approach to the better for Mexican stars.

Meaning, names like Penta, Dragon Lee or even a revived Sin Cara character, to name a very few, never mind the AAA ties now, could be viable options for this sort of idea.

Granted, all of this assumes Mysterio goes on a "tour" at all. Cena was an anomaly on this front. Maybe it's a one-off match, which means it would go to Dominik.

A fun idea there might be a "mask" or even career match. Obvious result, but it's felt obvious for about six years now that Dominik would be the one to retire Mysterio.

If WWE wants to really WWW'ify it, though, they could have their cake and eat it too by involving Gunther. The career-killing Gunther trying to cut in line and brutalizing Mysterio before Dominik makes the save and gets his own feud could put everyone over.

Speaking of putting people over, all of Mysterio's last match would be about Dominik. It's no secret he's had a mid year or so on the main roster. Morphing back into a beloved babyface by saving his dad, or going super-heat heel by stealing the mask…it all just works. It's not hard to pull off either route and, frankly, everyone already knows the actual matches will be classics.

One could argue for Penta doing the retiring, but the man is already main eventing specials in Mexico against Roman Reigns and winning briefcases. For all we know, he's going to shock win a top title very soon. He doesn't need the help at this point.

Fittingly, Mysterio's value to cruiserweights and the art of lucha libre around the globe is unquestioned. It would only be right that he uses his official goodbye to jump start Dominik's rise to the main-event scene to carry on in his stead.
