When Roman Reigns and Sami Zayn take to the squared circle in a battle of world champions at WWE Crown Jewel on Saturday, November 7, it will not only serve as the main event of a premium live event, but also the latest chapter in one of the greatest stories the pro wrestling empire has ever produced.

It is a story four years in the making, originating in 2022, seemingly culminating a year later, and revisited here as both men stand atop their respective brands as the top dogs of Raw and SmackDown, respectively.

In 2022, Zayn was fresh off a loss to Johnny Knoxville at WrestleMania 38 and lacking direction. He joined up with The Bloodline as an unofficial member of the faction, interfered in nearly all of their matches, and proved his loyalty over time.

Along the way, Zayn was so entertaining and lovable that fans bonded with him. There was genuine emotion as they followed his story, from an independent conspiracy theorist to "Sami Uso," finally accepted by the group he had tagged along with for months.

At the 2023 Royal Rumble, Zayn had grown tired of being treated like dirt by Reigns, berated and verbally assaulted. Faced with blasting his friend, Kevin Owens, with a steel chair, Zayn answered one last belittlement with a chair across the back of the Tribal Chief in one of the truly great moments in modern WWE history.

The crowd erupted for Zayn that night, and a few weeks later in Montreal, they were rabidly behind him as he battled Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship. He fell short of capturing the title then, thanks to interference from the Usos. Still, he would avenge the entire Bloodline experience at WrestleMania 39 when he teamed with Owens to defeat The Usos in the main event of Saturday's broadcast.

Zayn would agree to set aside their past issues and join forces with The Bloodline and CM Punk for the main event of the 2024 Survivor Series: War Games.

Since that point, though, the beloved Zayn's babyface run got stale and the fans betrayed him, began booing him, and necessitated a heel turn. As he has done countless times throughout his career, Zayn embraced the new role and did everything in his power to make the most of the Last Real Good Guy, obliviously claiming to be the same hero they cheered for all of those years and that it was the fans who betrayed him.

He has been so entertaining in the role that he is now a two-time WWE champion and the centerpiece of the SmackDown brand, a well-deserved spot for a guy who has consistently proven capable of getting (and staying) over.

When he squares off with Reigns in Riyadh at Crown Jewel, he will do so not as The OTC's lackey, looking to upset him for the championship, but as a cunning and fully realized WWE main eventer with the very real possibility of defeating the face of the company in a high-profile champion vs. champion match, a fitting conclusion to their epic story.

Reigns, as he did entering Elimination Chamber, has mistakenly underestimated Zayn, brushed him off, and tried to diminish the significance of his title and status as champion.

Even as a babyface, the leader of the Bloodline does not respect Zayn as his equal, which is true to the story and the character. The question is whether he will live to regret that attitude.

Or, perhaps, he is the dominant Superstar. Maybe Reigns steamrolls Zayn ahead of Survivor Series: War Games and what is expected to be The Bloodline's date with 946 inside the titular match.

Speaking of which, maybe a Zayn victory comes as a result of Royce Keys, Bronco Nima, Lucien Price, Carmelo Hayes, and Jaida Parker making an unscheduled stop in Riyadh.

The match does not need it, but it may be the only way Zayn picks up the win and, in his mind, silences the doubters and, well, finishes his story.
