The Utah Utes will open their NCAA season at home against the Idaho Vandals as the schools collide for the first time in more than 30 years.

No. 21 Utah begins the 2026 season at home to FCS program Idaho on Thursday in what will be the first matchup between these two programs since October 1993. Once common enemies in the mid-20th century, these two schools have been like passing ships in the modern era and are in for an epic reunion at Rice-Eccles Stadium.

This will be the first of three straight home games to start the year for the Utes, who are now under the leadership of new head coach Morgan Scalley. The former safeties coach has taken over from Kyle Whittingham after his 21 years in charge, hoping to build on last year's run to the Las Vegas Bowl.

Scalley did end up coaching the Las Vegas Bowl, but will be formally introduced to Utes fans in his newly elevated position this week. His Vandals counterpart is second-year coach Thomas Ford, who oversaw an agonizing 38-34 defeat to Cal Poly in Week 0 as Idaho started its campaign in the FCS' Big Sky Conference on a bum note.

Four of Idaho's five starters on the offensive line have returned from last season but were out of their depth against Cal Poly in a game where the run game failed to get going. That puts even more pressure on veteran quarterback Joshua Wood, who will have to pull strings early to give his side a fighting chance against FBS opposition.
