Yankees could target Brewers All-Star if David Bednar leaves in free agency

The Yankees could lose Bednar in free agency.

The New York Yankees ' bullpen may look totally different in 2027.

Six of their relievers will soon become free agents, including closer David Bednar.

The Yankees can extend him a qualifying offer, which would bring him back to New York for at least one season if he accepts.

Bednar is one of the more consistent closers in baseball, converting 35 of 39 saves this season. It would be a major loss for the Yankees if he decides to sign with another club.

Bleacher Report's Kerry Miller wrote that this will be a huge offseason for New York's bullpen roster construction.

"With David Bednar and darn near every other reliever of note hitting free agency, the Yankees have quite a bit of work to do on their bullpen. The dream target would be Mason Miller, if the Padres are willing to have that conversation," Miller wrote.

He identified Milwaukee Brewers closer Trevor Megill as someone the Yankees should target if they fail to re-sign Bednar.

"But while trading for Devin Williams didn't pan out how they hoped in 2025, going back to Milwaukee for Trevor Megill could be the move. He was an All-Star last year and probably ought to be a three-time reigning All-Star at this point," Miller added.

Megill throws a power fastball and nasty knuckle curve, which helped him punch out 69 batters in 61.2 innings in 2026.

He reaches free agency in 2028, and the Brewers have a history of trading their stars one year before they hit the open market.

Josh Hader and Devin Williams (both traded) were in identical contract situations as Megill.
