Packers' Josh Jacobs gets bad news as MarShawn Lloyd prepares for starting role

If you bought Josh Jacobs stock, it's officially too late to sell.

Ahead of roster cuts on Sunday, the NFL has put Jacobs on the commissioner's exempt list.

Three months after a domestic violence incident at his home in Wisconsin, Jacobs was charged with misdemeanor battery and misdemeanor criminal damage to property. His court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 17.

The NFL is now conducting its own investigation into the matter.

The commissioner's exempt list means that Jacobs, 28, cannot practice or play football until the investigation is complete.

Now with things trending down for Jacobs, it looks like the Packers could have a new starting running back for the time being.

Why MarShawn Lloyd will be starting RB for Packers

MarShawn Lloyd, in his third season out of USC, is set to benefit from this mess.

He's only played in one career NFL game but Lloyd is next man up if Jacobs is suspended or stays on the exempt list.

At 5-foot-9, 220 pounds Lloyd is a sturdy option to tote the rock for Green Bay.

His NFL stats are sparce. In his final year at USC, Lloyd rushed for 820 yards and 9 touchdowns. He added 13 receptions for 232 yards.

Another sign that points to Jacobs being out long-term is that the Packers have traded for Pittsburgh RB Kaleb Johnson.

Johnson is another inexperienced running back. He didn't find much success despite being drafted in the third round out of Iowa.

It's probably a bad sign the Steelers are willing to give up on him so quickly.

But the Packers need depth and they got it. Now they can move forward with Lloyd and maybe squeeze something out of Johnson.

The end takeaway? Jacobs' fate is up in the air. The commissioner's exempt list has no timetable.
