49ers TE Jake Tonges fined for leg whip on same play he tore his MCL

49ers tight end Jake Tonges 's final play of the 2026 season was a painful one in more ways than one.

The NFL announced that Tonges was fined $9,266 for unnecessary roughness in last week's win over the Rams. The fine was for an unpenalized leg whip block on Rams defensive end Myles Garrett in the second quarter.

Tonges remained down after the play and did not return. Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced this week that he suffered a torn MCL that required season-ending surgery.

49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk was also fined $20,033 for lowering his helmet to initiate contact.
