Fresno State returns much of a defense that ranked among the top 10 nationally in several categories in 2025, helping them to a stout 9-4 record. Running back Rayshon Luke and wide receiver Josiah Freeman are among six team captains that give the Bulldogs some experience on offense. They went 4-2 in road games last season and will be looking for their first win over a ranked opponent since 2021.

USC enters the game at 1-0 after beating San Jose State 42-26 in its season opener. Quarterback Jayden Maiava completed 25 of 29 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for a score. Trent Mosley had seven catches for 118 yards and a touchdown, and the Trojans finished with 505 total yards, including 164 on the ground. USC led 35-3 after three quarters before San Jose State scored 23 points in the fourth. The Trojans are 4-1 all-time against Fresno State, with their most recent meeting ending in a 45-17 USC win in 2022.
