Dan Campbell explains decision to bench Christian Mahogany
The Detroit Lions benched Christian Mahogany vs. Dolphins, and Dan Campbell explained why.
The Detroit Lions made a very surprising personnel decision in their 19-9 win over the Miami Dolphins. Lions coach Dan Campbell decided to give Miles Frazier his first career start at left guard over Christian Mahogany. There weren't any indications that Mahogany's play had dipped—in fact, he was nationally praised for his performance against the Vikings —so his benching came as a complete surprise.
After the Lions' win, Campbell explained the decision, noting it was a disciplinary action.
"That was team rules (for) Mahogany. It was really that simple," Campbell said. "Miles deserved his opportunity, so he got it. Doesn't mean it stays that way, but that was the way it was going to be today."
In his first career start, Frazier clearly struggled in the first half, giving up several early pressures to Dolphins defensive tackle Zach Sieler. He did settle down in the second half, though, helping the Lions score on every second-half possession—outside of the last drive that bled the remainder of the clock.
Still, there will be plenty of questions going forward about what exactly Mahogany did to earn a benching. Not only was he getting national praise and passing the eye test, but he has earned PFF's 10th-highest grade among guards with at least 130 snaps.
Hopefully, he can get back in the Lions' good graces and continue his strong season.
UPDATE: According to Lions beat reporter Justin Rogers, Mahogany exited the locker room as soon as media showed up , so we have no clarification on what rule he broke.
