HyVee Team of the Week: Mill Valley girls flag football

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- The Mill Valley High School girls flag football team is your FOX4 HyVee Team of the Week.

Winning a championship is never easy. Winning back-to-back titles is even harder. The Lady Jaguars are looking to accomplish that this year after capping off a 13-1 season just a year ago.

Although, this season looks a little different. Girls flag football is officially sanctioned as a varsity high school sport in Kansas. With the inaugural season underway, the Jaguars are looking to hit the ground running.

"We're really excited for this year," Kate Mikuls, Mill Valley QB and senior said. "Obviously like new competition, so it's going to be a lot different, but I think we're ready and we're expecting to be challenged this year, we're expecting to have a little bit of a chip on our shoulder and we're hoping that we can defend out title."

Just like any high school sport, there's new players on the squad each year. Last year's team had 28 girls on the roster, 12 of those players came back this year. With a lot of new faces on the team, many of which who have never played football, senior Paige Frost says watching them grow has been an awarding experience."

"Watching them grow is a really fun exciting thing, so just being that bigger mentor to them is just huge to me," Frost said.

Already knowing what it feels like to win a championship, Frost and the other returning players are looking to do it again.

As the team participates in a sport that continues to grow, Head Coach Carter Sebasto says winning team of the week is proof that hard work pays off.

"Grateful for them to be rewarded with something like this because they've been putting in the work, dealing with the heat, we've been up every morning 5 a.m. getting started so they deserve something like this."
