PHILADELPHIA − Now that the Eagles have trimmed their roster from 90 players to the NFL mandated 53, the next step begins:

That is the forming of the practice squad. NFL teams are allowed 16 players on the squad, 17 if one is from the International Player Pathways program. The Eagles have that opportunity as both IPP alums Uar Bernard and Joshua Weru were waived on Aug. 30.

That process begins on Aug. 31 at 1 p.m. once waiver claims have cleared. If a player waived by one team is claimed by another, that player is on the 53-man roster of the claiming team. If a player is not claimed on waivers, then he is eligible to sign to any team's practice squad.

Keep in mind that more than 1,100 players were either waived or released on Aug. 30 as teams trimmed their rosters from 90 to 53.

A practice squad player is not allowed to play in games. That is, unless he is one of the two allowed game-day elevations. After the game, the player is returned to the practice squad. A player is allowed to be elevated three times during a season.
