No. 23 Houston hosts Oregon State in Week 1 on Saturday when JaMarcus Shephard will make his debut as Beavers head coach. OSU is in need of a fresh start, after all, following a 2-10 season that marked its worst return since Jonathan Smith's first year at the helm back in 2018.

The Cougars, on the other hand, had themselves a banner season in 2025 as Willie Fritz produced a 10-3 record in his second year in charge. That run included wins in each of their six road fixtures, capped off with an enthralling 38-35 triumph over LSU in the Kinder's Texas Bowl.

It just so happens one of those road wins came at Reser Stadium around this time last year when Houston edged Oregon State 27-24 in overtime. Houston has won each of the last three meetings between these schools, with OSU's sole win in the rivalry falling all the way back in 1960 when future No. 1 pick Terry Baker was part of the team, though he had yet to move permanently to quarterback at the time.

Senior receiver Trent Walker is in the spotlight and will face off against his old side after transferring from OSU in the off-season. Walker led the Beavers in receiving over the past two seasons, albeit scoring only four touchdowns overall, but could come back to haunt some familiar faces in Shephard's first game at the wheel.
