IRSC proposes eliminating championship swim, dive programs
IRSC could eliminate its swimming and diving programs, whose men and women have combined for 100 consecutive NJCAA national championships.
Despite a decades-long string of national championships unmatched across college sports, Indian River State College's swimming and diving programs could soon cease to exist.
The IRSC Board of Trustees is scheduled to consider eliminating the Pioneers' dynastic swimming and diving programs at its Oct. 27 meeting. The proposal was recommended by President Tom Moore as part of the school's Athletic Restructuring Plan.
Indian River State's men have won 52 consecutive NJCAA national championships while the women have captured 48 consecutive national titles.
The meeting is scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the Williamson Conference Center Auditorium on IRSC's Dixon Hendry campus in Okeechobee.
If approved, the swimming and diving programs would be eliminated by the start of the 2027-28 academic year.
Also on the agenda is a proposal to move IRSC's softball, men's basketball and baseball programs to NJCAA Division II, where the school's volleyball team competes.
The administration also will evaluate the feasibility of reinstating women's basketball for the 2028-29 academic year. IRSC eliminated the program in 2024 .
