2026-27 Fantasy Basketball Draft Strategy: Hacking the default rankings

Using multiple data points in draft prep can help fantasy managers unearth value picks.

For those who take fantasy basketball seriously, a big part of preparation is checking (and comparing) rankings from multiple sites. Identifying outliers can help managers find value regardless of draft format, from consistent late-round contributors to players with league-winning potential.

In this article, we'll compare our preseason rankings with ESPN, Yahoo! and Fantrax, focusing on players whose predicted values vary by significant margins.

Based on the rankings, we rank Anunoby higher than the other sites. Despite his scoring average dropping by more than a point per game from 2024-25, the Knicks forward provided third-round value in 12-team leagues. During the Knicks' run to the title, Anunoby averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 1.6 assists, 1.5 steals, 1.1 blocks and 2.6 three-pointers per game.

Can he produce similar numbers during the regular season, especially if the Knicks stick with the offensive approach that won them the title? That is certainly conceivable. Also, Anunoby's availability wasn't an issue in either of his first two full seasons in New York, as he played 74 and 67 games.

Twenty-three seasons in, LeBron continues to hold off "Father Time." Fantasy managers can no longer justify drafting the future Hall of Fame forward in the first two rounds, but James should still offer top-50 value, at a minimum, in his new home. During the offseason, there were discussions about James taking on some point guard duties to lighten Tyrese Maxey 's workload.

However, with the 76ers already lacking depth at center and losing Ariel Hukporti to an Achilles tendon rupture, James will likely be asked to play small-ball center at times. He can certainly make plays for himself and for others in that role, and matching up with bigger foes could raise LeBron's fantasy ceiling. ESPN's ranking is the outlier, with him just inside the top 75.

Banchero can be a tricky player to pinpoint in fantasy basketball. While percentages have weighed down his value in the past, the overall production can't be ignored. Based on his past production, Yahoo and Fantrax rate the Magic forward highly heading into the 2026-27 season. The question is how new head coach Sean Sweeney will impact the Magic roster, a talented young group that still has offensive strides to make.

After 78 games in Philadelphia over two seasons, the team traded George to Boston in exchange for Jaylen Brown . He'll take on a key role with the Celtics, and an offensive system that isn't hesitant to shoot three-pointers could benefit him. The question is: how much should fantasy managers factor in his recent availability issues?

The ESPN and Yahoo rankings seem to hold the injuries against George, while ours and Fantrax's rankings appear to be more forgiving. If George stays on the court, he has good odds of exceeding preseason expectations, regardless of which rankings you prefer.

Morant has long been a tricky player to value in fantasy basketball properly. Even with the turnover concerns, the Trail Blazers guard can be an electrifying option when he's on his game. However, availability matters, too. After appearing in at least 61 regular-season games in three of his first four seasons, Morant has played 79 over the last three. Unfortunately, fantasy managers have to plan for at least one injury-related extended absence, and there have also been suspensions in the past.

In Portland, he joins a backcourt with plenty of options, including Damian Lillard , Jrue Holiday , and Scoot Henderson . And then there's Deni Avdija , who took on playmaking responsibilities for most of last season and enjoyed his best year as a pro. While our rankings and Fantrax give Morant a more optimistic outlook heading into the 2026-27 season, Yahoo and ESPN are more skeptical.

How much room for growth does a player have who offers little to no scoring value but is one of the NBA's best defenders? That's what we'll find out with Thompson, who averaged 9.9 points per game last season. He averaged 26.0 minutes per game, and preseason talk in Detroit is that Thompson will play more minutes. If so, that raises his fantasy ceiling, even with the lack of scoring.

Ausar averaged 5.7 rebounds, 3.1 assists, 2.0 steals and 0.9 blocks per game last season, numbers that helped salvage most of his value in category leagues. Based on the rankings, ESPN and Fantrax view him more favorably going into the 2026-27 season than we do, largely because of his limited scoring output.

It's a new era in Memphis, and while most of the conversation has focused on lottery pick Cameron Boozer , Coward should also be a factor. However, Yahoo values the second-year wing much more than any other outlet used for the column. The question is whether Coward can offer more value in the defensive categories than he did as a rookie. He averaged 0.6 steals and 0.4 blocks per game as a rookie, numbers that didn't make much of a mark when assessing his fantasy value.

Coward has room to grow offensively, and he should have every opportunity to step up now that players like Ja Morant and Jaren Jackson Jr. are no longer in the picture. Whether he exceeds overall fantasy expectations may depend on his defensive contribution, especially steals.

While Queen had some good moments as a rookie, he still had a long way to go defensively. Although the Pelicans were already out of contention for a postseason spot, his playing time dropped by about five minutes per game in March, mainly because of his defense. Queen finished the season on a decent run, averaging a double-double in six April appearances, which may have shaped how some fantasy experts view him.

ESPN, Fantrax and Yahoo all have Queen as a top-100 player in their rankings, but we aren't so sure. Yves Missi , who brings more defensively, has started at center in the preseason. Queen can still be a valuable option for fantasy managers, but expecting a top 100 return may be a bit much, especially if new Pelicans head coach Jamahl Mosley sticks with Missi (who appears to be a better fit next to Zion Williamson ) as his starting center.
