The Michigan Wolverines finished Saturday night with 192 yards of offense, a 2-for-10 mark on third down and four turnovers in a 15-6 home loss to the Michigan State Spartans, a team that arrived in Ann Arbor at 2-6 without a Big Ten win.

Michigan did not score until the final two minutes and came within 1:35 of its first home shutout since 1967, per On3 . The Paul Bunyan Trophy goes back to East Lansing for the first time since 2021.

Dave Portnoy, the Barstool Sports founder and one of Michigan's loudest alumni, had run out of patience weeks earlier. After the 13-6 overtime loss to the Indiana Hoosiers in October, he told first-year offensive coordinator Jason Beck to "go get a plane ticket to the f***ing moon" in a video on X.

This time he widened the target and went after the head coach too, posting a two-sentence verdict on X after the loss: "Fire Kyle Whittingham. Fire Jason Beck."

Whittingham was asked about the Beck half of that demand at his postgame news conference, and his answer bought his coordinator three more games.

"Not right now. Not as I sit here at this podium, no. But, at some point, you've got to have results. It's a results-driven business, and it's a bottom-line business. But not right here, right now. I'll evaluate everything after the season and determine what the best course of action is," Whittingham said.

"Falls on me. I'm not hiding from that at all. Anything that happens has got my name on it," Whittingham said of the loss.

How far has Michigan's offense fallen under Jason Beck?

Beck followed Whittingham from Utah, and Michigan pays him a reported $3 million, the most of any offensive coordinator in the sport, Maize n Brew noted .

Against Michigan State, the running game averaged 2.1 yards per carry, and it was the third time in nine games that Michigan went to halftime without a point.

Whittingham moved off Bryce Underwood earlier in the season, and Underwood did not take a snap Saturday while true freshman Tommy Carr took the snaps. Carr threw two interceptions. The game's only Michigan touchdown came from running back Savion Hiter with 1:35 left, after the outcome was settled.

Portnoy's call for Whittingham's job goes further than anything the coach addressed at the podium, and the schedule offers little room to change the subject.

Michigan, now 5-4 and losers of four of its last six, plays at the Oregon Ducks next, then hosts the UCLA Bruins before closing at the Ohio State Buckeyes.
