Red Wings news: Detroit strips Dylan Larkin of captaincy ahead of training camp

The Detroit Red Wings expect Dylan Larkin to be at training camp , even with his trade request over the summer. Unfortunately, he will not be a captain this time around, and there is uncertainty about what his future on the team looks like. In an attempt to clear up things as much as possible, Larkin and the Red Wings have written statements about what direction they're heading in.

"Over the past couple of weeks, Red Wings leadership and I have had several in-depth discussions. I've appreciated those candid conversations, and I will be at training camp with my teammates. When new leadership is in place, we'll talk further about the direction of the team. We will keep those conversations private, and I will keep my focus on the season ahead and on the guys in that room," Larkin said in his statement.

The Red Wings then announced they will begin the season without a captain.

"The Red Wings will begin the 2026-27 season without a captain being named. Any further discussions or decisions regarding this topic will be made once new hockey operations leadership is in place," the team said in a statement.

Larkin had been a captain for the Red Wings since 2021 and has been with the team for his entire career. He's currently 10th in franchise history in goals and points.

There have been a few moving parts for the Red Wings this summer outside of Larkin's trade request. Patrick Kane returned to the Chicago Blackhawks in free agency, and Steve Yzerman was moved from general manager to senior advisor. Yzerman noted that he didn't want to make any guarantees that he'd grant Larkin's trade request, who has a no-trade clause.
