Guwahati: Guwahati’s 406-run chase was a statement of India’s batting power. Shubman Gill’s record-breaking double hundred, Rohit Sharma’s attacking start and another successful pursuit of a 400-plus target reinforced the aggressive ODI blueprint India have embraced since the 2023 World Cup.Yet the post-match comments from head coach Gautam Gambhir and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak pointed to a larger question: how much do these batting paradises prepare India for the 2027 World Cup in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia?Gambhir was unequivocal.“There has to be a bit more contest between bat and ball because this is not cricket, this is only batting,” he said after the match. His concern was not India’s batting but the lack of relevance such surfaces offer a bowling attack preparing for major tournaments. On a wicket where both teams crossed 400, debutant Auqib Nabi leaked 84 runs in 8.5 overs and Indian bowlers struggled for control.“You’ve got to give something to the bowlers so there’s at least something they can work with,” Gambhir said.Kotak offered a more measured perspective, stressing that India must be prepared for whatever conditions await them. “We should be preparing for whichever conditions. Our batsmen, touchwood, should be ready for any conditions,” he said. The reality probably lies somewhere between the two views. The 2027 World Cup venues are officially confirmed: eight in South Africa, three in Zimbabwe and one in Namibia. They include Johannesburg, Centurion, Cape Town, Durban, Paarl, Bloemfontein, Gqeberha and East London in South Africa. While modern South African ODI pitches are more batting-friendly than they were a decade ago, they generally offer greater pace, bounce and seam movement than the surfaces India have been playing on during this home series. But while the venues are known, precisely how the pitches will play during the tournament is not. That makes matches such as Guwahati neither irrelevant nor a direct rehearsal for the World Cup.For India’s batters, repeatedly dominating good home surfaces provides valuable practice in converting starts into big scores, sustaining an aggressive tempo and handling the pressure of chasing imposing totals. Gill’s innings also demonstrated the ability to maintain intensity after spending four hours on the field in difficult humidity. But South Africa could demand another layer of batting skill where stroke-making is not as straightforward. The ability to shift gears when conditions refuse to cooperate could prove as important as scoring at ten per over when they do.The India think tank appears conscious of that. Spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule recently said the management was “very much aware” of the type of surfaces expected in South Africa and was trying to identify players who could have an impact there. He also pointed to the bounce in the Thiruvananthapuram ODI as closer to what India might encounter abroad. The bigger test over the next year, however, could be bowling.Gambhir’s comments on Auqib Nabi and Gurnoor Brar revealed a willingness to expose young bowlers to pressure situations rather than protect their statistics. “The more he bowls in tough conditions, in tough situations, the better it is for Indian cricket,” Gambhir said of Brar. That philosophy could become equally important with the bat. If India spend much of the next year scoring freely on home highways, they will learn how to dominate when conditions allow it. The real preparation for South Africa may come when they also experience situations where dominance is not immediately possible – like the tour of New Zealand starting in three-weeks’ time. The BCCI’s, currently announced, home calendar has three ODIs against West Indies, three against Sri Lanka and three against Zimbabwe — nine scheduled home ODIs through Jan 2027. India’s complete ODI schedule before the World Cup is not yet fixed.Guwahati proved India can chase 400. The next year must establish whether they can consistently find a way to win when anything between 280-350 is enough — and when conditions demand patience before acceleration.Stay updated with the latest Asian Games 2026 news, check the Asian Games medal tally and complete Asian Games schedule.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
