Houston Rockets star Kevin Durant didn't want to focus on his individual contributions in Monday's 109-93 win over the Boston Celtics.
The 16-time All-Star had a somewhat muted offensive impact, scoring 12 points on six shots. During the postgame press conference, he and the Houston Chronicle 's Varun Shankar briefly had a pointed back-and-forth about his performance:
Shankar, for his part, pointed out how Monday's game was an exception across Durant's legendary career and part of a larger trend to open the 2026-27 NBA season:
It's easy to understand Durant's perspective and see why he might be irked about focusing on his shot total in a game his team won. At the same time, it's notable when a player of his pedigree is taking a back seat a bit.
KD's scoring average (20.8 points) is on pace to be his lowest since his rookie season in 2007-08. With a full season in Houston under his belt, he and coach Ime Udoka may have found a formula to lighten his workload to the benefit of the entire offense.
The Rockets are second in the league in offensive rating (121.2), per NBA.com , through eight games.
Should this continue, fans won't be looking at Durant's shot figures in a critical light. Instead, the future Hall of Famer will be garnering a lot of praise for transitioning to a slightly lesser role and remaining as efficient as ever.
