In a matchup of two undefeated teams, the Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 136-129 at Crypto.com Arena on Tuesday night.
The Blazers moved to 3-0 thanks to Damian Lillard, Ja Morant, Jrue Holiday and Deni Avdija all scoring more than 20 points in a game for the first time this season.
Despite the loss, Luka Dončić recorded his second consecutive game with at least 40 points and better than 50 percent shooting from the field.
This was a matchup of the two best offensive teams in the NBA by rating to start the season. That certainly played out in this game with Dončić putting on another clinic, recording his third game with at least five made threes and showcasing his usual passing wizardry.
The first quarter, in particular, through four games has seen Dončić look virtually unstoppable. He dropped 16 points in the opening quarter to record his 20th game with at least 40 points since joining the Lakers.
Austin Reaves helped shoulder some of the offensive burden by recording his fourth straight game with at least 20 points and four assists.
This was only Dončić's 95th game with Los Angeles since the trade with the Dallas Mavericks. Anthony Edwards and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander are the only other players with at least 10 40-point games since that time.
Even with the Lakers' duo doing their part, it wasn't enough because the Blazers remain an unstoppable force right now. Any concerns about the fit between Lillard and Morant have proven to be unfounded thus far.
It doesn't hurt that Avdija is following up his breakout 2025-26 season with another strong start and Holiday has given their second unit a huge boost by coming off the bench.
Perhaps the most surprising part of the Blazers' start is they are currently third in defensive rating.
It's an incredibly small sample size, and their first two games were against the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings, but if they can stay anywhere close to league average as the season moves on, there's more than enough talent on the offensive end of the floor for the Blazers to be a factor in the playoff race.
Given how many injuries have already occurred to key players on Western Conference contenders, the Blazers' outlook isn't too bad amid a 3-0 start.
The Lakers' issues on defense this game were to be expected because they aren't loaded with talent on that end of the floor, but the trio of Dončić, Reaves and Walker Kessler gives them such a high offensive ceiling that they can win a lot of games.
Next up for the Blazers is a home game against the Memphis Grizzlies on Thursday. The Lakers will play the second night of a back-to-back on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Clippers at the Intuit Dome.
