Warriors, Heat, More on Wrong Side of NBA History With Rare Stat After Blowout Losses in Openers
Most of the NBA opened their regular-season schedules on Wednesday night, and the slate turned out to be historically one-sided.
Most of the NBA opened their regular-season schedules on Wednesday night, and the slate turned out to be historically one-sided.
According to OptaStats, six teams lost their season openers by 20 or more points on Wednesday, marking the first time that has ever happened in the same season:
Two of those teams fell by more than 40 points, as the Toronto Raptors destroyed the Chicago Bulls 135-92 and the Portland Trail Blazers dominated the Phoenix Suns 124-83.
Perhaps the two most interesting teams on the list are perennial playoff contenders in the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors.
There was a ton of excitement surrounding Miami's home opener against the Minnesota Timberwolves since it marked superstar forward Giannis Antetokounmpo's regular-season debut with the Heat.
The Heat were overwhelmed in a 25-points loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, though, as Anthony Edwards led all scorers with 45 points in Minnesota's 131-106 road victory.
Giannis played well in his own right with 35 points, but none of his teammates scored more than 15, which is undoubtedly something head coach Erik Spoelstra will hope doesn't become a trend.
As for the Warriors, they entered the season shorthanded with Jimmy Butler still out of the lineup while recovering from a torn ACL, and Kristaps Porziņģis on the shelf as he continues to deal with a long-running illness.
Golden State still had holdovers such as Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, but it wasn't enough to overcome a Los Angeles Lakers team that rolled to a 127-105 win at home.
Much like Giannis, Curry was something of a one-man show, scoring 23 points, while no other Warriors player scored more than 14 points.
Three Lakers players scored 23 or more points, though, led by Luka Doncic, who paced the game with 28 points to go along with eight rebounds and seven assists.
