Jonathan Kuminga, Wolves Reportedly Agree to Contract Amid Lakers Rumors, Updated Salary Cap

After spending the second half of the 2025-26 campaign with the Atlanta Hawks, Jonathan Kuminga has found his new team.

Kuminga is reportedly signing a two-year, $13 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to Shams Charania of ESPN. The deal came despite a better offer from the Los Angeles Lakers and other teams:

Kuminga, who was traded to the Hawks by the Warriors before the trade deadline, had his $24.3 million club option for the 2026-27 campaign declined by the Hawks in June, allowing him to enter free agency.

Kuminga spent the first five years of his career in Golden State, but failed contract negotiations between him and the Warriors indicated that a split was coming. Upon arriving in Atlanta, Kuminga put up good numbers off the bench, averaging 12.2 points and 5.6 rebounds per game.

While he proved he could be a valuable asset off the bench, it made sense for the Hawks to move on from him as they tried to save some money for the future.

The change of scenery should give Kuminga the chance to play a bigger role than the one he was set to have in Atlanta. The 23-year-old is hoping to reach new heights in his career, and Minnesota could be the place for him to make a leap.

He'll join a Timberwolves squad that is looking to compete for a title after a big offseason. The team parted ways with Julius Randle and Naz Reid this summer, but they picked up LaMelo Ball to help out Anthony Edwards in the backcourt.

Kuminga might not be a season-defining addition, but he should give them solid minutes off the bench.
