NBA icon Dominique Wilkins is stepping into a new role at the collegiate level.
The Hall of Famer was named the new college basketball general manager at Alabama State on Tuesday ahead of the start of the Hornets' season next week.
Wilkins' involvement in Alabama State's basketball program is perhaps a bit unexpected since he played collegiately at Georgia and isn't from Alabama. Nonetheless, it's an exciting moment for the SWAC program.
It's hard to say how much of a role Wilkins will play for Alabama State on a daily basis, but having a legendary name attached to the program should generate some more excitement and recruiting interest for the school.
The Hornets have appeared in the NCAA tournament six times, winning their first game, a First Four game against Saint Francis, in 2025. Alabama State has won the SWAC Tournament five times, with its most recent win coming in 2025.
Tony Madlock was the Hornets' coach from 2022 to 2026 but stepped down at the end of last season after a 10-22 campaign, taking over as the associate head coach of Memphis.
Alabama State hired veteran head coach Chris Wright ahead of the 2026-27 campaign, and he'll look to get the Hornets back to the NCAA tournament early on in his tenure. Wright was most recently the head coach of Langston, an NAIA school in Oklahoma.
Alabama State will begin its first season with Wright at the helm and Wilkins in the front office next Tuesday when it faces Texas A&M.
