Golden State Warriors stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green were understandably perplexed when they were on the bench to start overtime in Saturday's 126-119 win over the Orlando Magic.
"Steph and Dray weren't thrilled at first when I told them what we were going to do," coach Steve Kerr said, per The Athletic's Jason Jones . "But they understood and those guys gave us a four-point lead and really played well and set the table for Steph and Dray to come back and close the game."
Curry and Green entered with 3:48 remaining in overtime and Golden State up by two points. The Magic regained the lead, only for Curry to sink a finger roll and get fouled, knocking down the free throw. The Warriors didn't trail for the final 1:38.
The two franchise stalwarts acknowledged their initial annoyance at Kerr's strategy.
"And obviously me and Draymond are gonna have a reaction to that because we're competitors and wanna be out there," Curry said. "And the conversation and the energy was more frustration for us, not doubt in the unit that was going out there. And we wanted to make sure they knew that because they've been playing well all year."
Green pushed back in the moment before finally coming around.
"Eventually we're like, 'Cool. Come on, fellas, y'all got it,'" he said. "'We believe in y'all. We wanna play, but we believe in y'all.'"
Managing the workloads of Curry and Green is a season-long task. Giving them a brief rest may not mean much on a given night. All of those minutes they were on the bench can add up over an 82-game season.
Kerr may have also savored the opportunity to put his younger players in a difficult situation and get them that experience. Rookie forward Yaxel Lendeborg played all of overtime and scored seven points during the extra period.
Curry and Green can't carry the Warriors like they once did. They need the supporting cast to step up to have any hope of achieving a deep playoff run.
Kerr knows this as well and will coach appropriately depending on the situation.
